Seven (7) Signs the Watch Tower is a Cult!

For information on Cults in general go here or here.

#1. Cults Are Attractive Because They Promote An Illusion Of Comfort.

EXAMPLE #1 According to the Gospel of the Watch Tower, Jehovah’s Witnesses can live forever on a Paradise Earth simply by being a member in good standing. (See the Gospel of the WT here.)

EXAMPLE #2. In addition, the WT teaches that non JW friends and relatives get a second chance to embrace WT doctrine and earn salvation.

HOWEVER, while the idea of a second chance for salvation is appealing, the Bible is clear that death is the end of all chances. Hebrews 9:27 tells us that when we die we face judgment. So, as long as a person is alive, he has a second, third, fourth, fifth, etc. chance to accept Christ and be saved. Once a person dies, there are no more chances. G here to Got Questions to see a great article on "Second Chances."

#2. Cults Maintain Their Power By Promoting An “Us vs Them” Mentality.

EXAMPLE #1 “Don't associate with outsiders (non-Jehovah's Witnesses). You are too busy for that!” Watchtower, 2/1/74, p.93.

EXAMPLE #2. Question: Can JW’s associate with non-JW friends or relatives? If they are honest and moral, does that make any difference?

WT answer, “Notice the repeated advice about avoiding wrong association, ‘from these turn away,’ ‘get out from among them,’ ‘separate yourselves,’ . . . There is to be no partnership, no fellowship, no portion, no sharing with unbelievers.” WT, 2/15/60, p. 112.

EXAMPLE #3. All non-Witnesses, Worldly Governments and Organizations are under Satanic Control. Anyone who is not one of Jehovah's Witnesses is a "worldly person" and therefore, part of Satan's system of things. Thus, they are “Bad Associations.” Witnesses are forbidden to involve themselves in politics or interfaith efforts for this reason.

EXAMPLE #4. See “Reject Worldly Thinking" here, which is an article at JW.ORG.

#3. Cults Are Masters At Mind Control.

EXAMPLE #1. “He (God) wants his earthly servants united, and so he has made understanding the Bible today dependent upon associating with his organization.” Watchtower, Nov. 1, 1967, p. 668

EXAMPLE #2. “Jehovah caused the Bible to be written in such a way that you need his human channel to understand it." Watchtower, Feb. 15, 1981, p. 17

EXAMPLE #3. “Avoid independent thinking . . . questioning the counsel that is provided by God’s visible organization." Watchtower, Jan. 15, 1983, p. 22.

#4. Cults Tolerate No Questions Or Critical Inquiry. Doctrines of Jehovah's Witnesses are established by the Governing Body, and the denomination does not tolerate dissent over doctrines and practices.

EXAMPLE #1. "We should eat and digest and assimilate what is set before us, without shying away from parts of the food because it may not suit the fancy of our mental taste. We should meekly go along with the Lord's theocratic organization (WTBTS) and wait for further clarification…" “Watchtower,” February 1, 1952, pp. 79-80.

EXAMPLE #2. “Make haste to identify the visible theocratic organization of God that represents his king, Jesus Christ. It is essential for life. Doing so, be complete in accepting its every aspect. We cannot claim to love God, yet deny his Word and channel of communication. Therefore, in submitting to Jehovah's visible theocratic organization, we must be in full and complete agreement with every feature of its apostolic procedure and requirements.” Following Faithful Shepherds with Life in View, “The Watchtower,” October 1, 1967, p. 591.

EXAMPLE #3. "When we loyally submit to the direction of the faithful slave and its Governing Body, we are submitting to Christ, the slave's Master.” Loyal to Christ and His Faithful Slave, “The Watchtower,” April 1, 2007, page 24.

#5. Cults Have Little Financial Accountability.

EXAMPLE #1. CANADA. Charity Intelligence, an agency that monitors charities for Canadian donors, gives the WT a “F” grade because they do not provide details on how donations are spent. Go here for the Canadian report on JW’s.

EXAMPLE #2. AUSTRALIA. The article here deals with the efforts of the WT to sell assets and then sending those assets offshore to avoid paying Australian child-sex abuse victims.

EXAMPLE #3. TACOMA, WA. This article here (scroll down to "Stealing the Collection Plate") describes how the WT charges parking fees, to its members, when attending an event at the Tacoma Dome, in violation of the WT’s contract with the city of Tacoma.

#6. There Are Records, Books, News Articles Or TV Programs That Document The Abuses Of A Cult.

EXAMPLE #1. The web site SILENT LAMBS here, has links to records, books, news articles and videos that document the fact that some JW's are pedophiles and are shielded from Law Enforcement by the JW Organization.

EXAMPLE #2. At ‘Google’ type “jehovah's witnesses pediophilia” for more links to abuses of the Watch Tower.

#7. Cults Promote Themselves as the Exclusive Means of Knowing “Truth.”

EXAMPLE #1. “the Bible is an organizational book . . . For this reason the Bible cannot be properly understood without Jehovah’s visible organization (WTBTS) in mind." Watchtower, October 1, 1967, p. 587.

EXAMPLE #2. “An individual must have The Watchtower to understand the Bible.” 1983 Yearbook, p. 21.

EXAMPLE #3. Those who openly disagree with official teachings are condemned as "apostates" who are "mentally diseased“ and “they seek to infect others with their disloyal teachings”. “Will You Heed Jehovah’s Clear Warnings?” The Watchtower, July 15, 2011, page 15.
