What can we learn from the JW's? Part 1

First, we can learn the importance of having strong, definite convictions about matters of faith. If you ask a Witness what they believe, they will gladely tell you. In fact, the Witnesses are famous for coming to your door to tell you what they believe. The JW knows what they believe and can back up those beliefs from their Bible. What they don't know is that some verses in their Bible have been altered and others are never brought to their attention by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, their governing body, who exercise almost total control over all its members. The typical JW knows that they believe and feels that their beliefs matter for eternity. What the Witness doesn't realize is that he is an expert in WT doctrine and not Bible doctrine. See my blog Why do you see JW’s studying their Magazines and Rarely the Bible?

Most ‘Christian’ church members have been exposed to very little systematic Bible teaching. Since they “stand for nothing” they will “fall for anything.” Witnesses meet very little resistance and win many converts when they knock on the average ‘Christian’s’ door.

The challenge to the church is to “preach the word in season and out of season.” It is only through a thorough study of the whole counsel of God that members will be protected from the JW’s. Each church member (young and old) needs to know the scriptures so well that when a false doctrine appears on the horizon it can be identified immediately.

Second, we can learn the importance of knowing Scripture. JW’s can easily quote verses to support their beliefs. The verses they quote are often taken out of context, twisted or simply changed (see my many blogs entitled Presto Change-O! (Part 1 is here) or Twisted Scriptures and other Shenanigans (Part 1 is here) or Pesky Bible Verses that contradict WT Doctrine (Part 1 is here.)) and thus a perversion of Scripture. But, how many ‘Christians’ can quote book, chapter and verse to support their beliefs or to refute WT doctrine. Scripture memorization is important not only for evangelism but to defend the faith once handed down to the saints.
