The WTBTS
says that you don’t even need your Bible for a WT type of study. But they have
the potential convert use their Bible to give them the false idea that they are
indeed studying the Bible—when in fact they are just studying a WT publication.
The WT does not want you to study the Bible alone, for if you do, you will not
believe their doctrines—you will believe the doctrines of the Bible. Check out
this quote:
"From time to time, there have arisen from among the ranks of Jehovah's people those, who, like the original Satan, have adopted an independent, faultfinding attitude...They say that it is sufficient to read the Bible exclusively, either alone or in small groups at home. But, strangely, through such ‘Bible reading,' they have reverted right back to the apostate doctrines that commentaries by Christendom's clergy were teaching 100 years ago..." “The Watchtower,” August 15, 1981.
This WT quote says anyone who wants to study the Bible, by themselves or in a small group at home, is like Satan and will believe in apostate doctrine. And what are the apostate doctrines spoken of in the above quote? Would they happen to be the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the physical resurrection of Christ, all things the WT organization denies. So, if you read the Bible by itself, reading it for what it says, without the WT guiding you, you will adopt these doctrines.
The following quote speaks for itself, “Heavy research is not necessary. The Watch Tower has done it for you. The most beneficial study you can do is to read The Watchtower or Awake! or a new book by the organization.” WT, June 1, 1967, p. 338
The WT method for studying the Bible all stems from the founder of the WTBTS, their first president, Charles Taze Russell. He wrote a series called “Studies in Scriptures.” About these “Studies” the Watchtower states;
“Furthermore, not only do we find that people cannot see the divine plan in studying the Bible by itself, but we see, also, that if anyone lays the 'Scripture Studies' aside, even after he has used them, after he has become familiar with them, after he has read them for ten years - if he then lays them aside and ignores them and goes to the Bible alone, though he has understood his Bible for ten years, our experience shows that within two years he goes into darkness. On the other hand, if he had merely read the 'Scripture Studies' with their references, and had not read a page of the Bible, as such, he would be in the light at the end of the two years, because he would have the light of the Scriptures." (“Zion’s Watchtower”—later renamed “The Watchtower,” Sep. 15, 1910, p. 298.)
Let me summarize this quote: Read ONLY the WT’s books and you will have the truth. Read ONLY the Bible and you will be in error. Obadiah 1:3 comes to mine, "The arrogance of your heart has deceived you.”
What is wrong with studying the Bible the Watchtower way? Part 3 will look at how the WT says one can be “in the light” when studying the Bible and is here.
